CDA Endorses Colorado's Smart Meal Seal Program

What is the Smart Meal Seal?

The Smart Meal Seal was created by the Department of Public Health and Environment to establish nutrition requirements specifically designed for restaurant meals.  Restaurants can showcase those entrees that are lower in fat, calories, and sodium and include components such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables by highlighting them with the Smart Meal Seal.  Promotional materials and publicity will educate consumers about what the Smart Meal Seal signifies when seen on a menu.

March is National Nutrition Month!
Diet fads come and go, and some may help you lose weight--in the short term. For National Nutrition Month 2007, the American Dietetic Association says the most effective long-term way to achieve a healthful lifestyle is to be 100% Fad Free.

National Nutrition Month takes place in March and focuses the public's attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. It also spotlights the American Deitetic Association and its affiliate, the Colorado Deitetic Association, as the public's most valuable and credible source of timely, science-based food and nutrition information.

For more information and resources on National Nutrition Month please visit the American Dietetic Association website. You may also call the Colorado Dietetic Association at 303-757-2060 to learn more about the 100% Fad Free CD. The CD contains press releases and other materials designed to help you prepare stories on a variety of nutrition topics based on this year's theme.

  • "Be fad free and see an RD."
  • "Learn how to spot a food fad."
  • "Choose foods sensibly by looking at the big picture."

March is National Nutrition Month®

Complimentary Materials from the Colorado Dietetic Association

Nutrition is a key component of health, along with physical activity. The Colorado Dietetic Association (CDA) supports a lifelong commitment to healthful lifestyle behaviors emphasizing sustainable and enjoyable eating practices and daily physical activity. CDA is encouraging Coloradans to promote healthy eating and activity during National Nutrition Month® (NNM) in March.

This year's theme is 100% Fad Free. Too often people adopt the latest food fad rather than focusing on overall health. CDA members encourage you to get the best nutrition for your food dollar by using MyPyramid as your guide to healthy eating.

Click here to download some tools to inspire you for National Nutrition Month® compliments of CDA. And now it’s up to you. Won’t you join the effort and help us reach Colorado citizens with positive health messages?

  • Use your printed menus to promote nutrition tips.
  • Share tips during morning announcements.
  • Conduct supermarket tours to provide label reading opportunities and information about healthy food choices.
  • Create a “nutrition quiz corner” with a nutrition question every day in March.
  • Conduct a “Fear Factor”-type event. Provide vegetables and fruits cut into bite-size pieces. Offer an opportunity to taste and guess the food.
  • In February, ask children to begin saving clean, empty food product boxes. In March, read labels and compare calories, fat, sugar, calcium, iron, and fiber. Expand this into a menu-planning opportunity.
  • Sponsor a food drive and deliver the food to a homeless shelter or food bank.
  • Send out a NNM "Tip of the Day" via e-mail to staff or clients.

Please do us a favor and complete this evaluation form so we know how to make National Nutrition Month® materials even more useful to you. Return the completed evaluation form via mail or fax to:
