Nutritionist or Dietitian: What's the Difference?
In the state of Colorado, anyone can use the title of nutritionist, nutrition counselor or nutrition advisor regardless of education and credentials. On the other hand, a registered dietitian and registered dietetic technician are required to meet specific educational and professional standards.
What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
An RD is an expert in food and nutrition who:
- has a bachelor's or master's degree in nutrition
- has completed an internship or professional experience
- has passed a national registration exam
- participates in continuing education
What is a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR)?
- A DTR is a qualified nutrition technician who
- has completed a minimum of a two-year dietetic technician program
- has passed a national registration exam
- participates in continuing education
RDs and DTRs work in:
- hospitals and health care facilities
- schools and universities
- government and community agencies
- business and industry
- private practice settings
Colorado has five universities/colleges that offer accredited nutrition programs:
- Colorado State University
- Metropolitan State College of Denver
- University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
- University of Northern Colorado
- Johnson & Wales University
